Bald Eagle

Haliaeetus leucocephalus

 

Distinguishing Marks:

  • White head and upper neck.

  • Rounded wings and thick bill.

 

Bald Eagles can be seen from open waters to wetlands. Primarily fish eaters, these large birds can be seen plucking fish from the water with thick-taloned feet.

Double-crested Cormorant

Phalacrocorax auritus

 

Distinguishing Marks:

  • Sexes are similar-Large, dark water bird with a long neck and long, hooked bill and long tail.

  • Often seen perched in the water with wings spread out to dry.

 

The adult Double-crested Cormorant has almost completely black plumage except during the breeding season when it dons small white plumes on the head. It can be found in waters from wetlands to open waterways.
