Great Blue Heron

Ardea herodias

 

Distinguishing Marks:

  • Long yellow legs.

  • Long neck and head with white crown and black plume from above eye to back of head

 

These long-legged birds are difficult to miss wading along almost any slow-moving water. Their main diet is mostly fish, however they will also eat small invertebrates, mammals, reptiles or amphibians.

Call sounds like: gnack, gnack, gnack, gnack

 


 

 

 

 

Green Heron

Butorides virescens

 

Distinguishing Marks:

  • Sexes are similar- blue-gray back and wings, white neck stripe, black cap and rich-colored reddish-brown neck.

  • Yellow legs.

 

The Green Heron can be found in both wetland and open water habitats. Its diet is mostly small invertebrates, but it will also dine on fish.
